History

In 1983 film writer and journalist Marianne Gray was drinking with some fellow self-
employed friends.

They all agreed: self-employed people should have their own Office Party, just like everyone
else.

Since that moment, the NLSELC has met twice a year, for Christmas and summer parties,
attracting dozens of writers, artists, photographers, translators and assorted consultants,
one man bands and mavericks.

We generally meet at Islington restaurants, kicking off at midday and often continuing well
into the night. Some lunches have made it past midnight.

We’re not a networking organisation (although of course we talk about work sometimes),
instead we celebrate and bemoan the joys and tribulations of self-employed life, often
accompanied by copious amounts of wine.

Please have a look at the site and get in touch if you’d like to come along.
